New Education Requirements for Prescribers of Controlled Substances
New York State now requires all prescribers of controlled substances to complete at least three hours of mandatory prescriber education by July 1st.
The course work or training may be live or online and must include the following eight topics:
- New York State and federal requirements for prescribing controlled substances
- Pain management
- Appropriate prescribing
- Managing acute pain
- Palliative medicine
- Prevention, screening and signs of addiction
- Responses to abuse and addiction
- End of life care
Free online courses are offered by the New York Chapter of the American College of Physicians (NYACP) and the Boston University School of Medicine. The NYACP course is also approved for MOC (maintenance of certification) credits for Internal Medicine physicians. This course can be accessed through NYACP’s website (www.nyacp.org/paincourse). The Medical Society of the State of New York (MSSNY) has also developed three one-hour continuing medical education (CME) webinars which are available on MSSNY’s website (www.mssny.org).
