December is HIV/AIDS Awareness Month, a time to reflect on the strides made in combating the epidemic and recognizing the contributions of healthcare leaders like Dr. Mahrukh Bamji. Dr. Bamji, a nationally renowned expert in Pediatric HIV infections, is among the 13 exceptional Physician Affiliate Group of New York, P.C. (PAGNY) physicians recently honored by NYC Health + Hospitals for her unwavering commitment to patient care. Serving as Chair of the Department of Pediatrics at NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan and a Professor of Pediatrics at New York Medical College, Dr. Bamji exemplifies the compassion and dedication needed to advance care and research for vulnerable populations.
Dr. Bamji’s journey with NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan began after completing her residency, and she has since held several key positions, including Chief of Inpatient Pediatrics, Chief of Pediatrics ICU, and Deputy Chief of Pediatrics. Her leadership and commitment have been instrumental in advancing pediatric care at NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan. Reflecting on this honor, Dr. Bamji expressed her gratitude, saying, “I am honored and humbled.” Her humble demeanor and dedication to her field are evident in her extensive contributions to pediatric healthcare.
Dr. Bamji has earned a national reputation in the field of Pediatric HIV infections, co-authoring over 90 publications and receiving grant funds from prestigious organizations such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Institutes of Health for various clinical research studies and clinical trials. Her expertise and research have significantly advanced the understanding and treatment of pediatric HIV infections.
As a board-certified Pediatric Hospital Medicine Specialist, Dr. Bamji remains actively involved in patient care and the education of residents and medical students. Her dedication to teaching has been recognized repeatedly, as she has received the Best Teacher award on numerous occasions.
