Dr. Meholli, Jacobi Hospitalist, Named Outstanding Clinical Teacher by Einstein Students
Apr 25, 2016
Dr. Mimoza Meholli, Associate Director of the Hospitalist Division at NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi, has been chosen as the 2016 recipient of the Samuel M. Rosen Outstanding Clinical Teacher Award by students at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
The prestigious award is chosen annually by the graduating class of Einstein medical students from among their clinical teachers at the half-dozen hospitals where they train. Dr. Meholli is an Academic Hospitalist and an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the College of Medicine who teaches more than 80 Einstein students a year in her role as a Medicine Clerkship site leader for third-year medical students.
“The culture of student education at NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi (JMC) is a very positive one,” says Dr. Meholli, who completed her internal medicine residency at Jacobi and was a chief resident before becoming an academic hospitalist in 2010. “Both faculty and house-staff are very dedicated and committed to student teaching. I feel very privileged to have been trained amongst great teachers at JMC, and happy that I have the opportunity to strive to be the same myself and carry on that tradition.”
Dr. Meholli says the award reflects the collaborative approach she and her Jacobi colleagues use so students can take part in treatment decisions for the hospital’s patients.
“I consider the medical students to be another group of professionals who contribute what they know to the rest of the team,” she says. “Everyone is encouraged to speak up, regardless of their rank on the team. I encourage everyone to be involved, participate, ask questions, be curious and share with us what they’ve learned. This creates a positive learning environment and helps the team function better.”
Jacobi has an affiliate relationship with the College of Medicine. Third-year medical students take four-week medicine clerkship rotations at Jacobi, and fourth-year students are assigned four-week sub-internships at Jacobi. While hospital assignments are determined by lottery, many of the students who take their third-year rotations at Jacobi ask to spend their sub-internships at Jacobi as well.
“They like to be at Jacobi because our health care team is invested in their education and they are able to be more hands-on with regards to patient care,” Dr. Meholli says. “We consider students to be an integral part of the team, participating in patient care and exercising appropriate supervised autonomy.”
A native of Kosovo in the former Yugoslavia, Dr. Meholli immigrated to the United States during high school, received a Bachelor of Science degree in biochemistry from Northeastern University and her medical degree from Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Israel. She completed her residency at Jacobi in 2009 and has been Associate Director of the Hospitalist Division since 2012. She completed the Montefiore-Einstein certificate program in Bioethics and Medical Humanities in 2011 and incorporates bioethics, palliative care and narrative medicine elements into her teaching of students and residents.
Dr. Meholli lives with her husband in Manhattan and she enjoys traveling, baking, music, theatre and sports.
