Maryann Popiel, MD, Chair, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Jacobi Medical Center discusses how developments in mental health and evolving public perception of psychiatry have influenced her practice in an urban community such as the Bronx.
In an interview with Psychiatric Times, a leading publication in her field, Dr. Popiel talks about how professionally and personally fulfilled she is in her role as a PAGNY employee working within two of the largest NYC public hospitals in the Bronx: NYC Health+Hospitals/Jacobi and NYC Health+Hospitals/North Central Bronx.
"There are a lot of psychiatrists within our system that have been here for two decades or more. I think that if I am proudest of anything in our department is that. I think it speaks volumes. how one can be happy working here.
We have a huge service. That is one of the pleasures of working in our System.
25% of all the inpatient beds at Jacobi are devoted to psychiatry and close to 50% of the beds at NCB are devoted to psychiatry. Between the two of our hospitals, we are the largest safety net provider of psychiatric services in the Bronx.
We are a large department with tremendous opportunities for growth and advancement. The opportunities for professional growth and learning new skills are endless."
