NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan and NYC Health + Hospitals/Harlem in the Top 50 Hospital Inclusivity Ranking

Released last week, the 2021 list from the Lown Institute Hospitals Index—the second from the Brookline, Mass.-based nonprofit organization—assessed over 3,200 hospitals across the country.

To measure inclusivity, it looked at a hospital's 2018 Medicare claims and compared its patient demographic mix to its catchment area radius—defined by the distance its Medicare patients traveled—using that year's U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey.

In the top 50, many of the local hospitals came from NYC Health + Hospitals, including Metropolitan (#1), Harlem (#8) and Queens (#21)

Cristina Contreras, CEO of NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan, said the ranking was an affirmation of the long-standing relationship it had built with its community, who are primarily people of color. More than 50% of its patients identify as Latino, and over 45% speak a language other than English at home, she said.

"We hear from our patients that the culture of care at Metropolitan is different—they feel welcome being treated by people who look like them," she said.
