New York Medical College (NYMC) Health Sciences Library Presents Two Awards to Dr. Barbara S. Koppel

We’re Delighted to Announce that Dr. Barbara S. Koppel, was presented with two awards from the New York Medical College (NYMC) Health Sciences Library during their annual celebration of faculty research and authorship.

Presently NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan’s Chief of Neurology, Dr. Koppel received awards for “Most Cited Paper” and “Highest Altmetric Score” (most talked about in media/social media). The awards were in recognition of her article in the April 2014 issue of the journal Neurology* on the use of medical marijuana for selected neurologic disorders like multiple sclerosis, and her appearance on the CBS Evening News.

In addition to her duties at Metropolitan Hospital, Dr. Koppel is a Professor of Clinical Neurology at NYMC. Metropolitan Hospital has been affiliated with New York Medical College since the hospital’s founding in 1875, and represents the oldest partnership between a hospital and a private medical school in the United States.

Dr. Koppel is the Chief of Neurology at NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan in New York City. She received her BA in Linguistics and General Sciences, with distinction, from the University of Rochester and her medical degree from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, both in New York. Dr. Koppel completed her internship in Internal Medicine at Montefiore Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and her residency in Neurology at The Neurological Institute at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center, in New York City. She is board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and the National Board of Medical Examiners.

Dr. Koppel has held many university appointments, most currently as Professor of Clinical Neurology at New York Medical College, Valhalla, New York. She has been appointed to several professional boards, most notably as Secretary to the Professional Advisory Board of the Epilepsy Foundation of Southern New York.

Dr. Koppel is a member of several professional societies including the American Academy of Neurology and American Epilepsy Society, and is the Director of the Stroke Center at Metropolitan Hospital. She has written numerous peer-reviewed articles, abstracts, letters, and book chapters, and has lectured at many international and national scientific meetings. She is presently scheduled to lecture on cutting-edge topics both at an international conference this month and at a national conference in March of 2016. At the international conference, which will take place at the annual meeting of the Mexican Academy of Neurology in Puerto Vallarta, Dr. Koppel will speak on “Cannabis Use in Neurologic Conditions” and at the national conference next spring at the annual meeting of the Soc Neurotoxicology in Huntington Beach, California, she will present on “Cannabis for Neurologic Conditions.
