Walter Ramos, PAGNY’s General Counsel, was the guest of honor and keynote speaker in September at the 2015 Convocation Ceremony for the Ras al-Khaimah Medical & Health Sciences University (RAK Medical School) in the United Arab Emirates. Ras al-Khaimah is one of the seven emirates that make up the United Arab Emirates.
With guidance from Mr. Ramos, the RAK Medical School in 2015 received approval from the New York State Education Department to place students in clinical clerkships in New York. The approval means the medical school’s didactic and clinical curriculum is equivalent to medical programs in New York State.
In his convocation speech on Sept. 30, 2015, Mr. Ramos invoked the Beatles, noting that the 45 graduates from the RAK Dental, Pharmacy and Nursing Programs had traveled a “long and winding road” to get to their graduation day. He urged the graduates to honor their chosen professions “zealously by practicing competently and making continuing competence an ethical duty rather than a regulatory burden.”
He continued, “Honor your professions by striving to keep pace with the changing science and expectations of your profession.” He also reminded the students that “you are health professionals, and that requires a commitment to continued learning.”
Mr. Ramos shared the honor with His Highness Sheikh Saud Bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member, Ruler of Ras al-Khaimah and Chancellor of the RAK Medical and Health Sciences University.
