With its hyperbaric chamber and ability to simultaneously treat multiple patients for smoke inhalation, carbon monoxide poisoning, and more, NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi has long served as the premiere burn center in the tri-state area, as featured in NY1 video. In the wake of the establishment of the Second Annual Burn Symposium, however, the hospital has also started to garner international attention.

The Burn Symposium, started by faculty at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and the Surgery program at the University of Puerto Rico, has been held for the past two years in San Juan, Puerto Rico. NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi sends a few of their surgical doctors to Puerto Rico to participate in this significant annual event. PAGNY Dr. Bruce Greenstein, the Director of the Burn Center at NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi, and a founding member of the Burn Symposium, reported that following the event he “was contacted by a surgical program director from Vienna, who had attended the symposium, [who] would like to send…surgical residents to NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi to do rotations through the burn unit.” Dr. Greenstein further remarked, “The Burn Center is part of a global health initiative and for the future I’m looking to expand the symposium to be held in other countries in Central America and perhaps [in] the Dominican Republic.”

Even before such an influx of residents arrives, Jacobi’s Burn Center has four fellows and residents that rotate in from surgery programs at St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital, Mount Sinai Hospital, Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center, Montefiore Medical Center and Physician Assistant students from Touro College.

The renowned Burn Center treats an average of 160 patients monthly on an outpatient basis and a total of 211 patients were treated inpatient and discharged at the end of the 2015 fiscal year.
